Slotkin Statement on Voting No Against Funding for the Department of Homeland Security

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) released the following statement on her vote against funding the Department of Homeland Security and ICE:

“Today, I voted no on the bill that included funding for ICE. The events taking place in Minneapolis represent a cultural moment in America — where people across the political spectrum saw, with their own eyes, U.S. citizens abused, threatened, and gunned down. Our fundamental rights as Americans, trampled.

“I have talked about these very issues for a year now, and I was unable to support more funding without serious, legislated change.

“My sincere hope is the White House and my Republican colleagues in Congress hear the chorus from the American people, and use the next two weeks to put the appropriate limits on ICE. The model should be our state and local police officers, who adhere to a set of standards every day while protecting our communities.

“If my colleagues meet the moment and accept legislated reform and change, I am ready to vote for the bill.”

Earlier this week, Slotkin took the floor of the Senate to give a speech about the situation in Minneapolis, the attack on our freedoms and to call for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign, be fired or be impeached.

John James Said He Was Screwed in 2020 Loss; Vowed Consequences if Elected Governor

LANSING — Today, as John James is spewing election conspiracy theories with Anthony Forlini in Macomb County, a reminder that James last year was pushing “lingering but unproven claims of widespread election fraud” by saying that he was “screwed” in his 2020 election loss while ominously vowing “consequences” if he’s elected governor.

The event comes as a new investigation released yesterday debunked Forlini’s recent claims of noncitizens voting in Michigan’s elections and found that there was “no evidence” to support his claims.

James has a long history of election denialism and peddling of conspiracy theories. In 2020, James falsely declared victory on Election Night and then refused to concede for more than three weeks while challenging the results and calling for a delay in certification.

“John James is a two-time statewide loser who can’t get over the fact that he lost in 2020, and has now spent the past five years fuming over it and claiming that he was ‘screwed,’” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman. “We know James is grumpy that Trump keeps snubbing him as the primary gets more crowded, but this is just more desperation and extremism that Michiganders will ultimately reject once again.”
