The Lansing Herald Media Group is going to open up production crew opportunities for our fall high school game broadcasts. Meant for high school students; these are opportunities they can work at their discretion. As part of the pool you pick and choose your assignments out of the open opportunities (posted biweekly).
Pay is $20-$60+ per game (depending on assignments approx $15-$40 per hr). We will only bring on ten students in total.
Everyone in the pool will have access to the following opportunities:
GoFer - A go-fer’s job is to run back and forth in a game if something comes up. (Go for this…go for that) Run to the pressbox to verify a name, run to the scorers table because we didn’t catch who got the assist, run to the car to grab a cord we forgot, run to the field and ask a coach because we are missing a number on the roster, run to the concession stands for waters ect. (Not glorious and task oriented, lots of downtime with moments of electric adrenaline rush. Students looking towards med careers, firefighters, emt’s, police ect should gravitate towards this)
Camera Operator - Runs a camera (or multiple cameras) during a game. Follows the action & manages the camera(s) during the game. Off air, non speaking technical position. (Hot, cold, wet, on your feet ect. Might be working on the press box roof! Not always comfortable it’s a workman’s role with little glory but is rewarding. Introverts should inquire with gusto!)
Statistician - Keeps stats during the game. Works directly with broadcast crew at or near the broadcast position in a non speaking role. (Near the heat but not in the fire, meticulous nature needed & has to HATE to be wrong. It’s the future accountants, lawyers, teachers and insurance people role.)
Sideline Reporter - On air role for pregame, halftime/intermission & postgame segments. May interact with players and coaches. Performance experience will be helpful (On air content creator or theater people as this a role for the preeners of the world. Dress up to be seen. Will command EVERYONE’s attention. Requires being brave and bold.)
Color Commentator - On air broadcaster. Should have knowledge, experience or enthusiasm for the sport. Pluses are the ability to entertain and you need to be a natural talker. (Folks - This is the heart of the fire because live entertainment is extremely difficult. The show MUST go on and YOU are bringing the show. You can’t be late, have to think both in the moment and ahead of it, all while being accurate, mindful and entertaining. This is the proving ground for the heatseeker. If you succeed in this role you can take on the world. Only for the truly ambitious.)

Your team makes it this level it's getting serious now. This is when you start to see entire towns jumping on team bandwagons and oh boy do they tune in.
To see a team reach this level of competition is extraordinary and rare. Even though the big media is broadcasting these games too the audience look to us for their home town call. This is about police escorts and signs forever welcoming people to the home of their state champions.
