Peppermint Creek Theatre produces Michigan premiere of play exploring the U.S. founding document
LANSING, MI — This November, Peppermint Creek Theatre Company (PCTC) is proud to present the Michigan premiere of What The Constitution Means to Me, a powerful, thought-provoking play by Heidi Schreck that explores the intricacies of the U.S. Constitution and its impact on our lives today. The production will run from November 8 - 17, 2024, and promises an unforgettable theatrical experience that is as timely as it is profound.
Directed by Peppermint Creek's artistic director, Chad Swan-Badgero, What The Constitution Means to Me brings audiences into the world of fifteen-year-old Heidi, who, as a teenager, traveled the country giving speeches about the U.S. Constitution for college tuition prize money. Decades later, Schreck’s acclaimed semi-autobiographical play revisits her youthful idealism and examines her own experiences to investigate how this founding document shaped her life and the lives of generations of Americans, particularly women.
The play is as humorous as it is poignant, weaving together personal memories, historical insights, and
political commentary. It has received numerous accolades since its Broadway debut, including Tony Award nominations and the Obie Award for Best New American Play, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
“This is a unique opportunity to reflect on what the Constitution means in our world today,” said PCTC Artistic Director, Swan-Badgero. “In a time of intense social and political polarization, this play encourages dialogue and invites us to grapple with what our country stands for and how we can shape a future that is truly just and inclusive.”
What The Constitution Means to Me is not only a journey through Schreck’s life but also a call to action for audiences to critically engage with the Constitution and question how well it serves modern America. Through the performance, PCTC reaffirms its commitment to producing plays that tackle complex issues, encourage civic engagement, and inspire audiences to think beyond the stage.
“We’re especially proud to be producing a play that falls under our season theme of “Ladies First”, which puts women and women’s voices and stories front and center,” says Swan-Badgero. “Heidi Schreck’s timely play is not only powerful, but raises so many questions about how our founding document does or does not support women in our culture”.
What The Constitution Means to Me promises to be a riveting and timely production that highlights the power of the Constitution and its continued relevance in contemporary America. Don’t miss this powerful exploration of our nation's past, present, and future, only at Peppermint Creek Theatre Company.
